Brad Mehldau Trio, the group led by the great American jazz pianist – Brad Mehldau, has performed in numerous events and has given splendid live performances worldwide. One of the very remarkable performances of the group has been at the Malta International Jazz Festival (2009). While presenting an eclectic program to suit all tastes, the jazz festival is aimed at exposing the Maltese audience to the big names in contemporary jazz. Thus, offering the Brad Mehldau Trio live performance in the event was a must.
Born in 1970, in Jacksonville, Florida, Bradford Alexander Mehldau was brought up in Connecticut, where he had shifted with his family in early childhood. Although Mehldau received classical training mostly, his interest in jazz developed early on. During his junior year of high school, Mehldau, enthused by his passion for jazz, played in the Hall High School jazz band of Hartford, CT, and won Berklee College’s Best All-Around Musician Award. He got enrolled in New School for Social Research in New York to study jazz, under the supervision of Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Junior Mance, and Jimmy Cobb. He was soon appointed by Cobb to play in his band – Cobb's Mob. Mehldau also played as sideman with a variety of musicians and the most significant of these would be with the Joshua Redman Quartet, after which he formed his own group of three, comprising Jorge Rossy on the drums and Larry Grenadier on the bass. Additionally, Mehldau worked together with Pat Metheny (guitarist) and released two albums, along with getting on board with Grenadier and Ballard for a worldwide tour.
Being inspired by Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau is known for playing unique and original compositions, jazz arrangements and jazz standards of pop music, particularly rock. Together with his trio, Mehldau has recorded arrangements of the music of The Beatles, Radiohead, Nick Drake, and Paul Simon, and more. The great jazz pianist also proves an interest in and awareness of philosophy, especially of art and music. He cherishes Brazilian music as well, quoting Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and Simone.
Mehldau has released many super hit singles and albums. His first and the best solo piano album is Elegiac Cycle, released in 1999. Other popular albums he released include Places, Art of the Trio, Live in Tokyo, Anything Goes, Day Is Done, and many more. However, Largo remains his most significant release. One of the very unique features of the album is that it has recorded Mehldau performing with different groups outside of his typical trio arrangement, where he adapted to a number of interesting lineup situations.
Brad Mehldau is a household name today, and people of all ages enjoy his music. Attending a Brad Mehldau Trio concert has always been a musical treat for all the music buffs, as the group earns rave reviews by critics worldwide.
